Where is the Leopold Area

The Leopold Estate is situated within the Mile End East ward of the London Borough of Tower Hamlets. The estate is bordered by Burdett Road and Mile End Park along the western edge, St Paul’s Way to the south, Ackroyd Drive and the London to Southend railway line to the north and Bow Common Lane and the Gas Works to the east.

The Estate is close to the Financial Centres of the City of London and Canary Wharf - but has not benefited from the wealth of these areas.

HISTORY

The section of the East End of London which the Leopold Estate is situated is steeped in History.  Going right back to the 13th Century- The peasants revolt which protested about the first poll tax - led by Wat Tyler gathered at nearby Bow Common before their ultimately unsuccessful march on the City.

The area became built up by the development of the nearby docks on the Isle of Dogs and Wapping during the 18th and 19th Century and suffered accordingly during the closure of the docks in the 1970's.

The area suffered considerably from German bombing during the second world war - it is estimated the up to two-thirds of the housing in this area was damaged during the years 1940-1944.  The Leopold Estate was built on bombed out land.

The area throughout the years have been a haven and refuge for immigrants from the Huguenots in the 18th Century and  Jewish & Irish in the 19th century and nearby Limehouse was the London's first Chinatown - who came from the Ships in the docks.. Today the area has a high Bengali population - the Leopold Estate, though, currently has a proportionally low Bengali population - but this is rapidly changing increasing the ethnic diversity of the area.
